Count specific words and phrases in a draft

Whole words only keeps cat from matching cats or category. Turn it off to count those substrings too.

Counting a particular word helps you check repeated wording, product names, or phrases in a draft. Switch Count only to Words & phrases and enter one target per line. The tool gives each target a separate count. It can match whole words or find literal text inside longer words. You can search the full document or restrict the same targets to a selected passage.

Cat, cats, and category aren't the same word. The cat naps. New York is not new yorker.

How this is calculated

The search uses literal text rather than regular expressions. A period in a target means a period, so you don't need to escape punctuation. Whole word matches follow the same word boundaries as the main counter. A multiword phrase must also match its internal spacing and punctuation. For example, thank you with one space doesn't automatically match the same words separated by a newline. Match case makes capitalization matter. Duplicate targets are counted once. Matches don't overlap within one target. Separate targets are counted independently, so a phrase and one of its words can both match the same part of the draft.

Verdict

Keep Whole words only enabled when you're checking vocabulary or repeated terms. Disable it when you're looking for a prefix, suffix, or exact sequence inside a larger word. Review the separate rows instead of treating the combined total as a count of distinct passages. If you search for both new and new york, their results can include the same occurrence. A high number isn't automatically a writing problem. Some subjects need a repeated name or technical term for clarity. Use the result to find patterns worth reading, then decide whether a rewrite helps the reader.

Frequently asked questions

Does the character count include spaces?
Yes, the main count includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks by default. The No whitespace card excludes all of them. Open Counting options to change the main count. Windows and classic Mac line endings are normalized to one line break.
Can I count only certain characters or words?
Yes. In Count only, type characters together or enter one word or phrase per line. You can match case and choose whole words or substring matches. Duplicate targets are counted once. Matches don't overlap within one target, but separate targets can match the same text.
What's the difference between a line and a paragraph?
A line ends at a line break. Empty lines and a final line break count toward the line total. A paragraph is a nonempty block separated from the next block by a blank line. Visual wrapping in the editor doesn't add lines or paragraphs.
How are emoji, words, and sentences counted?
Visible character mode groups a complete emoji or an accented letter as one character when your browser supports it. Code point mode counts the underlying Unicode code points. Word and sentence boundaries use browser text segmentation with an English locale. Abbreviations and languages can affect counts. Older browsers use simpler fallback rules. See Unicode text segmentation for the underlying boundary concepts.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
Counting runs in your browser. This tool doesn't upload or save your text and doesn't put it or your custom search terms in the URL. Share links open an empty counter. Copy text or counts if you want to keep them before closing or reloading the tab.
Can I count just part of my text?
Select text in the editor, then choose Selected text. The counts, custom matches, writing limit, breakdown, and word frequency panel all use that selection. Choose Full text to return to the entire document.
