USB 3.0 vs USB 3.2 Gen 2: is the 2x jump worth it for external drives?

The naming is the trap. USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, and USB 3.2 Gen 1 are all the same 5 Gbps interface - the USB-IF just renamed it twice. The real speed step up is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps. A portable NVMe drive like a Samsung T7 sustains 950-1000 MB/s on Gen 2 but is throttled to about 450 MB/s on plain USB 3.0, so the upgrade is real for NVMe-class drives. Put a SATA SSD or HDD enclosure on the same port and both links cap at the drive's own speed and the Gen 2 advantage vanishes.
