Optimal Viewing Distance Calculator
Find the perfect screen size or seating distance for your TV or desktop monitor setup.
Configure Your Setup
Loads a starting seating distance for this screen size. You can adjust it below.
THX dictates a 40-degree viewing angle for theater screens to ensure the display covers your peripheral vision, fully immersing you in movies or action games.
Historical SMPTE EG 18-1994 used a 30-degree theater viewing reference. SMPTE withdrew that document in 2003, so use this as a comparison point rather than a current universal living-room standard.
How to use this tool
Enter the screen size
Type the diagonal of your TV or monitor in inches. For a 65-inch TV, enter 65. For a 27-inch monitor, enter 27.
Pick your viewing context
Choose TV / Couch or Monitor / Desk to load a starting seating distance for the current screen size. You can edit that distance directly. The field of view uses the screen size and distance you enter.
Read the recommended distance
The calculator returns reference seating distances in feet and meters for the THX 40-degree cinema target and the historical SMPTE EG 18-1994 30-degree reference. These are comparison points rather than universal current standards. SMPTE withdrew EG 18 in 2003.
Check the room plan preview
The top-down blueprint renders your screen and seating distance to scale. Use it to confirm your couch or chair actually fits in the room at the recommended distance before you commit to a screen size.
About this tool
The Optimal Viewing Distance Calculator helps you compare field-of-view targets for your TV, home theater, or desktop monitor layout. THX and the historical SMPTE EG 18-1994 reference provide useful geometry, but they do not guarantee a single best distance or prevent neck or eye fatigue. Simply input your screen size and context to see your setup dynamically scale on a top-down floor blueprint.
The Formulas Behind Seating Distance
Viewing distance calculations are based on basic trigonometry. The physical width of a 16:9 screen is calculated as: Width = Diagonal × 0.8716. Using your seating distance, the horizontal field of view angle is calculated as: Angle = 2 × arctan((Width / 2) / SeatingDistance). The calculator compares a 40-degree THX cinema target with the historical 30-degree SMPTE EG 18-1994 reference. SMPTE withdrew EG 18 in 2003, so the 30-degree value is not presented as a current daily-use recommendation.
