How they differ
OLED panels achieve true black by turning individual pixels completely off, resulting in contrast ratios effectively infinite and response times under 1 ms. This makes them the gold standard for HDR content and competitive gaming. However, OLED suffers from burn-in risk when static elements remain on screen for long periods, and prices are significantly higher. IPS panels use a uniform backlight, so they cannot achieve true black, but they offer excellent color accuracy, wide viewing angles, and no burn-in concerns. Modern IPS panels with mini-LED backlights can approach OLED contrast through local dimming, though haloing around bright objects remains a limitation.
