TN vs IPS: which panel type should you choose?
Raw speed versus visual quality.
TN and IPS are the oldest LCD panel technologies still in production. TN is the fastest and cheapest, while IPS delivers superior color and viewing angles. The gap has narrowed over the years, but the fundamental trade-off remains.

How they differ
TN (Twisted Nematic) panels twist liquid crystals to modulate light, enabling response times as low as 1 ms and refresh rates up to 360 Hz at minimal cost. This made TN the default for competitive esports monitors for over a decade. The downside is poor color accuracy, narrow viewing angles, and washed-out colors when viewed off-center. IPS panels improved on all of these weaknesses at the cost of slightly higher response times and prices. In 2026, fast IPS panels can match TN response times while maintaining far better image quality, making TN increasingly niche.
Verdict
Choose TN only if you are a competitive gamer on the tightest budget and need 240 Hz+ at the lowest possible price. Choose IPS for literally every other scenario — the color, viewing angles, and overall experience are dramatically better for a modest price increase.
